Bellefonte Central Rail Trail

Centre
Part of the plan for the Arboretum at Pennsylvania State University, this trail will be used to reach botanical gardens, wetlands, research facilities, and woodlands. For most of the way the path is tree-lined, opening to fields and pastoral views. It ends shortly before the Mt. Nittany Expressway overpass. An informal trail extends nearly 2 more miles to Port Matilda. At its far reaches, the trail becomes rugged and is best suited for pedestrians or mountain bikes. The original 19-mile rail line connecting Bellefonte and State College was built in the mid-1880s to move iron ore. It changed hands in 1892 to become the Bellefonte Railroad.
