Trail Description

One of the first rail-trails in the nation, this former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad corridor was first an equestrian trail. The Rail-Trail Council is currently attempting to negotiate easements along the 10-mile corridor. Many locals do use the trail though it can be tough to follow. However, it is pretty and fun to explore. The first four miles out of Montrose are narrow, rough and tumble, with sharp turns, exposed tree roots, rocks, puddles, low branches and the occasional ATV user. At the second road crossing look for the trail between two houses, a little to the right. At the next crossing find the trail slightly to the left, down a gravel road about 500 yards. The rest of the trail is wider. Flanked by tall trees, it gradually slopes down to end at an active railroad at Alford.
