Trail Description

The Whitetrail Trail runs across the top of Chestnut Ridge from Lick Hollow to the Quebec Run Wild Area through State Forest and State Game Lands. A challenging trail, the lack of hiker traffic can allow the trail to become overgrown and obscured by ferns. Pay attention to the blue blazes. In the past, this area was heavily forested and is still criss-crossed by abandoned logging roads. While it can be hot in mid-June, that is also the time that the Mountain Laurel blooms. One short bypass is to continue up Pine Knob Trail from Lick Hollow to the Pine Knob overlook. The expansive view is highly recommended. Another rigorous 2.5 mile side trip is to White Rocks. In 1810, Polly Williams fell to her death from these rocks. She was rumored to have been murdered; pushed off by her reluctant fiancee. In more recent times, rock climbers have obtained permission from the private owners to climb the sandstone faces. - Kevin Geiselman
