Trail Description

The Loyalsock State Forest's Cross-Country Ski Trails are composed of five loops of trails suitable for hiking and cross-country skiing. Portions of these trails are also suitable for biking and equestrian use. The Hawkeye Ski Trail is a 7.23-mile red blazed trail. It is particularly noted for its beauty in winter, but is a pleasant hike any time of year. Portions of this trail are also ideal for biking or horseback riding. Also in the area are the Sand Spring, Sharp Shinned, and Cherry Ridge Trails. The Sand Spring Trail is best suited for hiking and cross country skiing. At 2.96 miles the Sand Spring offers an easy walk with views of the wetlands that are protected in the Devil’s Elbow Natural Area to the north. The Sharp Shinned trail is 2.39 miles long and connects the Hawkeye with the Old Loggers Path. This trail can be used to make alternate loops. The Cherry Ridge Trail is a 5.71-mile trail found on the other side of Ellenton Ridge Road. This trail is relatively easy and offers a peaceful setting. Following administrative roads on the eastern and southern portions it eventually follows an old grade on its western side, where it passes sections of serene hemlock stands as well as boulders and rock outcroppings.
