Trail Description

Discover life as a pioneer on this self-guided interpretive trail. Learn about forest management practices, identify tree species, view insects, and notice the effects of diseases while you hike through the Pine Tree Trail Natural Area. Follow the old wagon trail up the hill to the large stand of white pine that once was a farm field in the 1800’s. Along the way, cross the small intermittent stream that served as the settler’s water source. Take a short hike off the trail to see the rock piles that were once a foundation. Look closely and see the entryway, root cellar, and remains from the chimney. Points of Interest: farm field, homestead remains, Pine Tree Trail Natural Area, white pine stand, interpretive stops. The Pine Tree Trail is located within the Elk State Forest, in Elk County, between the towns of Driftwood and Benezette. The trail starts at the Hicks Run Campground on West Hicks Run Rd.
