Heritage Rail Trail County Park

The Heritage Rail Trail was recognized not once, but twice in 2015 – as the 2015 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year, coordinated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee, and when inducted to the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame this past September by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The Heritage Rail Trail County Park is a 21-mile linear park that travels through the heart of York County, south to the Mason-Dixon Line. The trail is a 10-foot-wide compacted stone surface, designed for hiking, bicycling, running, horseback riding, as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months. The previously inactive rail line alongside the trail now provides “Steam into History” excursions from New Freedom to the Hanover Junction Train Station.
