Susquehanna River Water Trail - Middle Section

The Middle Susquehanna River Water Trail follows the main stem of the Susquehanna River, running between the confluence of the North and West Branches at Sunbury, to the Dock Street Dam in Harrisburg. It includes 24 island based, primitive campsites available on a first come basis, located on state owned islands under the jurisdiction of the PA Bureau of Forestry. A trail guide indicates location of campsites by GPS coordinates. Trail guides are available through membership or at numerous outfitters. See web site for more information. The trail accommodates small, shallow draft, powered and non-powered watercraft. Users must know their capabilities, their travel route, and anticipated time on the water. Plan for approximately 2 miles per hour float time. Avoid being caught on the river after dark. River levels and currents vary widely and can change quickly. The water trail is accessible at several locations owned by the PA Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) and at other municipal or private boat launches. All boats, including canoes and kayaks, using the access points at Halifax, Amity Hall, and Fort Hunter must have a valid boat registration. For non-power boats, including rafts, registration is not required to use other non-PFBC accesses or to visit the river islands. Some of these accesses may be primitive. There is a dangerous low-head dam just south of City Island.
